Read an excerpt from James Hetfield biography “So Let It Be Written”

Courtesy of Lesser GodsThe forthcoming James Hetfield biography So Let It Be Written will hit shelves next week, and you can read an excerpt from the book now via Noisey.

The excerpt is taken from the book’s sixth chapter, which details the recording of Metallica‘s sophomore album, 1984’s Ride the Lightning.

“Even at this early stage, Hetfield had developed a unique guitar sound, and it took [producer Flemming] Rasmussen to make the best of James’s newfound need to sound like nobody else on the planet,” writes author Mark Eglinton.

He continues, “Rasmussen explained, ‘He liked the fact that he had his own sound and wasn’t trying to copy someone else’s. I think we took most of the recording process to pretty much get his thing. So we ended up looking for something that was new but also sounded something like his own stolen amp.’”

So Let It Be Written features interviews with Jerry Cantrell of Alice in Chains, Pantera‘s Rex Brown and Anthrax‘s Charlie Benante. It will be released on Tuesday, April 11.

Hetflield and Metallica will kick off a North American stadium tour in support of their new album Hardwired…to Self-Destruct on May 10 in Baltimore.
